Prime Minister Trudeau today responded to questions on a rumoured “assault weapons” ban today by acknowledging there will be details forthcoming in “coming days”.
In articles in the Globe and Mail and in CBC unnamed sources in the government have said that the Liberal government will announce a ban of eleven semi-automatic rifles including the AR-15, the Mini-14 among others.
Along with the Ruger Mini-14, the government will ban the AR-15 and similar types of firearms that have been used in a number of mass shootings in the United States, officials said. They added that the ban will also include the CZ Scorpion, the Swiss Arms Classic Green, the Beretta Cx4 Storm, the Robinson Armament XCR and the Sig Sauer SIG MCX, among others, as well as firearms that use the same platforms. — Globe and Mail
The government is said to be employing an order in council to create the new regulations rather than seek to pass legislation. This means it will become force of law without debate in the House of Commons.
An official e-petition this year asking the government not to employ an order in council for a gun ban became the most-signed petition in Canadian history but has yet to be tabled in the House.
