Wednesday, directors from your club were joined by members from Chilliwack Fish and Game Protective Association, the UBC and BCIT student gun clubs and representatives of two firearms retailers (Tiger Arms and CTCS) to express our concerns about the May 1st prohibitions to Senator Yonah Martin and her staff in a Zoom chat.
The Senator heard about the confusion and anger about the Liberal government’s Order in Council that arbitrarily changed the classifications of firearms that were used by members for legitimate sporting and hunting purposes.
The Senator also heard from firearms retailers that the government’s bans now placed a huge burden on small business and the suggestion that gun stores could return their unsaleable merchandise to distributors was unworkable as the United States would not allow re-importation of the firearms the government has banned, leaving hundreds of thousands of dollars in stock rendered worthless.
The Senator also heard that the sporting disciplines of 3-Gun, IPSC and other dynamic sports that were increasing in popularity were now facing elimination with the banning of the most popular sporting firearms. We heard that because of COVID restrictions and the use of the Order in Council, that the Senate was very limited in their ability to hold the government to account but that she would continue to raise our issues when back in session.
